This morning I want each of us to ask ourselves as question God asked to Cain many, many years ago: “Why are you angry?” (Gen 4:6). This question can help us examine our souls and I pray also help us to break through to the Other Side.
Normally, we only see the down-side of anger. Paul put it on his “bad” list (Col 3:5-8) as did Jesus (Matt 5:21-22). And most certainly, unrestrained anger can place us and others in a world of hurt (Gen 4:2-7).
The Scriptures also underscore that it is possible to be angry without sinning (Eph 4:26- 27).
Of course, Jesus himself, famously got angry in the temple and overturned the moneychangers’ tables (Matt 21:12-13).
Actually, anger is akin to energy, force and passion…all necessary qualities for good.
Could it be that Jesus’s anger was the catalyst for the healing of the blind and lame mentioned immediately following his interaction with the moneychangers? (Matt 21:14). Does our very salvation hinge upon Jesus’s ability and willingness to free his soul to anger?
Finally, maybe the worst part about anger is when it is negatively directed at ourselves rather than when it is used as a power source for repentance and change.
