One Day at a Time Sweet Jesus! On this third Sunday of Lent I would like us to focus on the phrase “Give us today our daily bread.” (Matt 6:9-11)…a prayer that may help us gain solidarity with the compassion of Jesus for those who are hungry (Matt 14:13-16).
Although Jesus wants to feed our bodies, he is even more concerned about feeding our souls (Jn 6:26-56)…a teaching that many of us find difficult to follow (Jn 6:60-68).
Feeding the body rather than the soul was the first way Satan tested Jesus in the wilderness. Turning stones into bread would have made Jesus an instant success, bypassing any dependance on God for his daily need (Matt 4:1-3).
Jesus refused to go there (Matt 4:4) citing Deuteronomy 8:3.
Jesus reminds us in the Lord’s prayer to stay in constant/daily dependance on the Father when we sojourn in our own wilderness. In the process he will feed our soul through his word, friends and prayer.
But once is never enough…It is “one day at a time, sweet Jesus!”
