February 19, 2012: Follow Jesus into the Darkness of the Cross
Series: Follow Me into the Darkness
Luke 9:23
Intro: Today we finish up a series
about following Jesus into the Dark…which is one of the most
difficult but important of spiritual lessons. Quite frankly, I like
the idea that I can follow Jesus into abundant joyful living. And
this is one of his promises:
February 12, 2012: Follow Jesus Into the Darkness of the Night
Series: Follow Me Into the Darkness
John 13:12-17
Today and every Sunday this year we are
going to be talking about following Jesus. Today we continue a series
on following Jesus into the Dark. I know this may sound a bit
ominous.
What is more fearful than the Night?
It is fraught with uncertainty. How many of you have been to places
that you don’t want to be at night? These are places of
uncertainty. Bad things can happen here.
February 5, 2012: Follow Jesus Into the Darkness of the Storm
Series: Follow Me Into the Darkness
Matthew 8:18-27, Psalm 107:29, Job 38:1
Today and every Sunday this year we are
going to be talking about following Jesus. But today we start a
series that at first may sound a little odd. Our new series is about
following Jesus into the Dark. Following Jesus into the Light makes
sense… but why would we want to follow Jesus into the Dark? And
this morning we are going to be talking about following Jesus into
the Storm.
How many of you
have a storm story? A time when you got caught in a storm and you
thought your number was up, your time had come… the bejeebers were
scared out of you…
Sometimes storm stories force us to
realize that we are mortals and that are days are indeed numbered.
There is something about storm stories that connect us to God in
special way…
One of my favorite storm stories has
to do with the time I was a park ranger in Glacier National Park. On
my days off I would go hiking. I had an opportunity to ride my
motorcycle to Logging Lake, and then take the motor boat across the
lake to another trail head which led to another lake where I sat and
ate my lunch and watched fish jump and enjoy my life until I saw this
menacing cloud to move closer and closer?
January 29, 2012: See Who You Are Called to Be and What You are Called to Do
Series: Follow Me into the Light
John 9:1-5
You notice that no candles are lit this
morning, which is a little bit different for HarborPointe. Because I
want to highlight one candle. I want this candle to represent my
candle and your candle… the light that you and I have been given
while we are here on this earth. I realize that most of your candles
are bigger than mine. Your wick is a little bit longer than mine. You
have a bit more wax… but the truth of the matter is that relatively
speaking none of us have all that much time here on this earth… and
someday in the not too distant future, it will be extinguished.
January 22, 2012: See Where You Have Been and Where You Are Going
Series: Follow Me Into The Light
John 8:12
Several years ago, actually, I
believe it was January 2004 or 5, some of us in the Fox Hill area got
to see one of the most bizarre sights we have ever encountered. It
was night time and the light in the distance began to fade in and
out, in and out… the whole sky line was lit up in this eerie glow.
From our vantage point, it look light Langley might have been bombed.
I wanted to go outside to see what I could see, but Ann said don’t
go out there… “It might be a nuclear bomb”
Then finally, all the lights went out.
Everything was pitch black.
Then we began to ask ourselves two
questions: What has happened? And then What are we supposed to do?
